The Tragic Journey of Oedipus Rex is one of the most well-known stories in literature. It is a powerful and heart-breaking tale of a king who unknowingly fulfills a prophecy that causes his life to unravel in tragedy. The story of King Oedipus has been told for centuries, captivating audiences with its dramatic plot and powerful themes. In this blog post, we will explore the background of the story and its characters, as well as its significance in literature and culture today.
The Tragedy Journey of Oedipus Rex
The classical tragedy Oedipus Rex is typical of these tragedies in many ways, one being Aristotle’s analysis of the play. although tragedies such as A Streetcar Named Desire don’t match the Aristotelian definition of tragedy, it’s worthwhile to consider them with Aristotle’s definition in mind.
Aristotle described tragedy by considering its plot, its characters, and their actions. Tragedy’s plot should take the form of one grand and completed action. Every part of the play must add up and be in line with the tragic ending: causes must be related to effects and they must be logically linked. the central figure must not be just an ordinary person and must be greatly admired and have excellent traits. he also needs to have a weakness that’s called hamartia. A consequence of a character’s wrong judgement, either from error or from wrong action, needs to lead the character to the fall from which there is no escape. To bring the character and audience to his undoing and downfall, the revelation should come from something inside of the character and not something outside, like the supernatural or the mysterious twists of fate and chance.
The plot of the tale is tragic, but we also have a typical tragic character in Oedipus. He’s a great man with some ideals and committed to finding the truth and solving the problems facing his country. Like all tragic characters, he has a tragic weakness. The tragic weakness of his character is that he becomes too careless about respecting the gods. when it comes to fate and destiny, he defies any inner voice and wisdom.
In the play Oedipus Rex, one of the tragic aspects is the constant ominous atmosphere of dire and frightful happenings. There is never any settling down of the conflict or lessening of tension that is prevalent among the characters and builds in our minds throughout the drama; moreover, there is no comic relief, not even when the drama comes from Shakespeare. In a tragedy such as this one, the playwright has designed the dialogue with care to create a very serious tone and mood and to give way to catharsis in the end. Fake expectations fueled by the chorus ultimately transform into the tragic purification of emotions (purgation), shared in the theater with the audience. the change in the characters is quite tragic, as is the addition of the chorus.
Human beings are bound to limitations, so people should stay within their boundaries. There’s no need to try to do everything. To maintain a happy, full, successful life, avoid arrogance in excess because a life led this way can only end in disappointment. Moderation is the path to a healthy and fruitful life. It is said that the downfall of a protagonist can be forecast by observing hubris, which is a negative character flaw, or fatal weakness in the protagonist, with fate then assisting that weakness by setting in motion the circumstances for the catastrophe. Until the final moment the protagonist goes through a series of test and the people watching feel bad for them because of their power and patience that had been drained. His misfortunes do not really match up with the wrongdoing that he has done.
As a king, Oedipus bossed people around and unfairly accused people who worked for him. This behaviour should not have continued and Oedipus should have been aware of the fact that in the future, things might change and people could turn against him. The message that this play imparts is that Oedipus’s suffering is deep and deeply moving to us, as readers and/or audience members. Irony pervades the entire plot. According to legend, Oedipus’s parents found an effective way to escape a prophesized future of ruin, where Oedipus would unknowingly murder his father and marry his mother. Following the ancient adage that ‘what is looted cannot be blotted’, Oedipus killed his father and married his mother. Ironically, Oedipus Rex is called the tragedy of fate because father thinks he is moving away from the terrible fate. Seeing his people’s suffering was impossible for Oedipus, so he strove to find and punish the defiler. For the answer to this question, we need to examine the question of fate. He accepts the reality courageously when he learns that he himself was the murderer of his father. It is not as if he faces his fate as a coward. It is as if he confronts it as a hero. The suffering he has endured now makes him a wise person. This is what makes him a great hero. Through his suffering, he has become a saint, and no human suffering can touch him anymore. In one way, he has gained redemption through his suffering.
In Greek tragedy, fate plays a major role and hubris plays an important role. Even though the final disintegration is too much to bear, one must accept their moral responsibility, even if the tragedy was mostly caused by fate. The ability to learn from suffering makes one mature. In order to avoid tragedy, we need to practice moderation.
